The General Catechetical Directory states that catechesis “must take diligent care faithfully to present the entire treasure of the Christian message” (#38). All its essential elements are to be presented as a whole, even in the initial stages of religious education. In the beginning this presentation will be simple adapted to the limited capacity and experience of young children. Then it is to be progressively deepened and broadened in accordance with the level of the children’s development.
The content presented in the program falls under these headings:
| Scripture |
God’s Words of Love |
| Commandments | God’s Laws of Love |
| Sacraments | God’s Signs of Love |
| Liturgy & Prayer | Our Response of Love |
| Creed | Our Proclamation of Love |
| Morality | Making Choices to Love |

Tuition:
A nominal fee is asked per student to cover the cost of textbooks and materials. An additional fee for special materials is asked for those receiving the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. NO STUDENT IS DENIED PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM because of financial difficulty.
Attendance, Absences, Dismissal:
Students are asked to arrive on time as class time is limited. Please do not drop off students before 6:50. Absences are to be reported to school office during school hours if possible (330.644.3777). Please DO NOT CALL THE RECTORY. All dismissals will be from the school, not from Church. Please observe the safety measures outlined in picking up your child from class (Parking Lot Safety). In case of an emergency during PSR classes you may call the school office.
Dress, Discipline, Respect for Property:
Students should dress in an appropriate manner, reflecting Christian modesty and decency at all times. The classroom teacher is responsible for maintaining discipline in the class. If it becomes necessary to remove a child from class, the Program Coordinator will be advised and a parent meeting called to handle the situation. Teachers and students are urged to respect the property and possessions in the classroom.
Emergency Cancellation of Class:
In the event of inclement weather, please tune to FOX 8 News. If St. Francis has been closed during the day, there will be NO PSR classes that evening.
Student Materials and Evaluations:
Mostl materials will be provided. Any lost books are to be replaced at the student’s expense. Students are responsible for bringing their books and other necessary material to class with them each week. Please make sure your child is ready for class just as he or she is for their public school. At the end of each semester, evaluations will be given.
Parking Lot Safety:
The “SAFETY ZONE” between Religious Education Center and School will be in force from 8:00-8:15 pm. It will be marked off by orange cones. All children are to enter and leave the building by way of the glass double doors off the parking lot. Classes will be dismissed beginning with the oldest students and ending with grades 1 and 2. The students will walk to where the parent is parked in the lot. Students are not permitted to enter a vehicle that is not parked in a parking space with the motor off. The Safety Zone assures the child space to walk and spot where their parent is parked in the lot without having to wander through parked cars. We encourage grades 1-3 parents to pick up their children at the Safety Zone or assign an older sibling to that task. Children will always be dismissed from school - never from the Church. Your child’s safety is a major concern. Please help us by observing these simple guidelines and by DRIVING SLOWLY and CAREFULLY before and after the PSR class time.
What the Program Teaches:
Objective
Children come to understand what we believe as Catholics and how to live out those beliefs; our Catholic identity.
Elementary Program
1st grade focuses on God, a basic concept of Church, and traditional prayers which are part of our faith.
2nd grade concentrates on the Sacraments of Penance, Holy Communion, Forgiveness, Jesus’ love and the Mass.
3rd grade offers a deeper look at the Church, the Creed we progress, and Prayer in the life of Christians
4th grade studies the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as our foundation for living moral lives.
5th grade deepens the students’ understanding of the Seven Sacraments, and various Holy Days and feasts in which we celebrate our faith.
6th grade studies the Old Testament and how the Books of the Hebrew Scripture are important to us today.
7th grade studies the Church and Sacraments.
8th grade reviews the basics of the faith with special emphasis on the Holy Spirit in our lives and morality - as well as preparing for Confirmation.
